Fada ni Khichdi /Broken Wheat Khichdi


For the final day of third week of BM#35 under healthy food for Diabetes, I have prepared this zero oil , fat free khichdi from Tarla Dalal's site. This is a wonderful Gujarati meal with combination of broken wheat , split green gram and few mild spices.When it comes to broken wheat we always think about upma , lapsi and Dalia . Now it's time to learn and make a nutritious meal with broken wheat. Broken wheat is enriched with calcium, folic acid, fibre, iron, and other nutrients. So let's start the recipe .yum

1/2 cup broken wheat
1/4 cup split green gram (Dhuli Moong ki dal)
1 onion , sliced
1 tomato , chopped
1/4 cup green peas
2 cloves garlic , chopped
1 teaspoon ginger , grated
2 green chillies, chopped
Few coriander leaves , chopped
2 cloves
1 cardamom
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder
Salt to taste
1cup water , boiled

Wash and soak dal and broken wheat in 1 cup water for 10 minutes.
Heat a pressure cooker and dry roast cumin seeds , cloves , and cardamom followed by ginger and garlic. Keep the flame low while roasting.
Add onions , green chillies , tomatoes and peas. Stir for a minute and then add salt , turmeric powder and chilly powder.
Stir and add soaked dal and broken wheat . Mix well and add 1 cup of hot water.
Cook for 3 whistle and let the steam escape before opening the lid.

Add chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with yoghurt , chutney or any side dish.

Serve-2. Cooking time -30 minutes
